Gabriela Niznik: Fashion is a powerful form of visual expression

Can you tell us more about your journey into the world of production organization? What inspired you to pursue this field at the Krzysztof Kieslowski Film School?

My journey into production organization began with a love for storytelling and a fascination with the intricate process of bringing a narrative to life. The Krzysztof Kieslowski Film School attracted me with its strong emphasis on both the technical and artistic aspects of film production. The school's reputation for fostering creativity and innovation in Polish cinema inspired me to pursue my studies there. I wanted to develop a comprehensive understanding of production that would allow me to blend various artistic disciplines, including my passion for fashion.

Your interest in fashion is evident. How do you incorporate fashion into your work within film production, and what draws you to combine it with intriguing locations?

Fashion is a powerful form of visual expression that can greatly enhance the storytelling in film. I incorporate fashion into my work by carefully selecting costumes that reflect the character's personality and the narrative's mood. Combining fashion with intriguing locations adds depth and context to the visuals, making each frame more engaging and cinematic. The interplay between fashion and unique settings allows me to create a more immersive and compelling visual experience.

Having grown up surrounded by art in all its forms, how has this influenced your approach to both fashion and film production? Can you share any specific experiences that have shaped your artistic sensitivity?

Growing up in an environment rich with art has deeply influenced my creative vision. It taught me to appreciate the nuances of different art forms and how they can complement each other. One specific experience that shaped my artistic sensitivity was visiting an exhibition of Zdzisław Beksiński's work in Cracow. His surreal and haunting paintings left a lasting impression on me, showcasing the power of visual art to evoke deep emotions. This experience made me realize the importance of creating strong, evocative imagery in my own work.

Experimentation seems to be a key part of your creative process. Can you tell us about a recent project where you pushed beyond your comfort zone? What did you learn from that experience?

Experimentation is indeed a cornerstone of my creative journey. Recently, I worked on a fashion photoshoot that took place at an abandoned market. The setting was quite unconventional, and it presented a unique blend of raw, decayed structures with the vibrancy of fashion. This contrast is something I want to explore more. It was challenging to find the right balance between the gritty environment and the elegance of the clothing, but it pushed me to think outside the box.

The Krzysztof Kieslowski Film School has a rich legacy in Polish cinema. How has your time there influenced your perspective on the intersection of art, fashion, and film?

My time at the Krzysztof Kieslowski Film School has profoundly influenced my perspective on the intersection of art, fashion, and film. The school's curriculum encourages a multidisciplinary approach, allowing me to explore how different art forms can enhance film production. Learning from experienced filmmakers and artists has taught me to appreciate the subtle ways in which fashion and visual art can contribute to storytelling. The rich legacy of Polish cinema at the school has also inspired me to honor tradition while pushing the boundaries of contemporary filmmaking.

Are there any particular artists, filmmakers, or fashion designers who have had a significant impact on your work? How have they influenced your style and vision?

Absolutely, there are several artists who have significantly influenced my work. Helmunt Newton's bold and provocative fashion photography has always inspired me to push boundaries and explore the edgier side of fashion. Agnes Kulesza and Lukas Pik's collaborative work captivates me with its unique blend of art and narrative, which often guides me in creating more storytelling elements in my photographs. Sonia Szostak's use of natural light and her ability to capture raw emotion have deeply influenced my approach to portraiture.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations in the fields of fashion and film production? Are there any specific projects or collaborations you’re excited to pursue?

I am currently planning several projects that will go into production in the fall. I want to start experimenting more ( with locations, styling, etc.) and build even more explicit storytelling. I looking forward to share the results of this work.
