Marcel Castellano: I always had an affinity for photography

Marcel, can you give us a little intro as to who you are and how did your interest in photography develop?

I'm a young Colombian-Venezuelan artist with a determined and intriguing personality and character. I'm constantly exploring my inner reality to offer your a sophisticated aesthetic through my artwork.

I always had an affinity for photography, even since I was a child when I only played with my mother's video camera and my sister and nieces like models. My professional interest as photographer was aroused when I moved to Madrid-Spain looking for opportunities as a makeup artist. At this time I was faced with the need to have a quality portfolio to apply for better jobs, which despite my talent did not count on it, since in Latin America at that time it was not thinking about it.

What does it take to achieve a unity of the artistic and commercial aspects of fashion photography?

In my photography I apply the idea of selling, any aspect it sells something, from a concept, a model, a product; you could sell something in a imagen. I respect flat photographs that do not even sell me an emotion, but to me a photograph with good composition is when it offers something artistic and the same time sells something.

In your experience, what are the most difficult aspects of professional photography?

To me, one of the most difficult aspects is to understand that inspiration comes from within and that what your camera photographs is what your eyes see. My advise is get used to seeing only beauty things to take the best pictures of your life.

What do you hope people take away from viewing your images?

Each image made by me has an emotion, it has a message and convey something. When I take a photograph I am expressing a feeling, message or situation of my life.

Photography has become my tool to speak.

You've clearly worked with a wide range of models, what tips can you recommend to models looking to expand their portfolio?

I think that something quite important for a model is to understand that not all profiles fit it on same aesthetics, and not all aesthetics fit it on same models. Being creative and loving your work is essential for success.

What are you looking for in a fashion model? What is an X factor for you?

I really like to play with the different aesthetics that exist in the market. At most of my projects I prefer to work among with tall and thin girls with exotic faces.

An X factor for me could be that you want to "eat" my camera with poses.

How do you use social media in conjunction with your business? What role does it play in your job?

Social media are very important for me and my business, because they have been the means have used to promote myself and to be able to reach more international public.

Marcel, how would you define "beauty"? What does it mean to you?

Beauty for me is the harmony of a complement of things that make a product, landscape, animal or person attractive to the eyes. Symmetrical things are common, but I am a lover of asymmetry and find beauty in it. Beauty is the reflection of your inner reality.

How do you feel about digital manipulation in present-day photography? What do you think it delivers in the final image?

To me, technology is our present and it is the future, therefore I feel that who used we are the modern artists of the moment, digital manipulation is simply a tool.

What is typically in your camera bag and what is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?

Than my camera, there is a new equipment which is my Flash ProFoto B10 which has amazing light, I definitely love it.
