How's this year been treating you so far?
I have a new nephew, which is giving me so much joy this year.
'The Muppets Mayhem' is coming out soon on Disney+. What can you tell us about your character Moog and how does he differ from other characters you've played?
Yeah, I'm super excited about this show and for people to get to know Moog. To be able to act alongside iconic Muppet characters is such an honor. My character Moog is that friend that everyone wants and needs in their life. He's THE #1 fan of the iconic muppets band, "The Electric Mayhem ."He follows them all over the world and is truly in heaven whenever he's around them. He's just a breath of fresh air. He differs from other roles I've played because I've never really played a character that loves something so much (the band) that he would genuinely do anything/everything for them. It's endearing.
Last time we spoke, you shared that you love screenwriting and had a horror screenplay you co-wrote with a writing partner. How is that going, and can you share any updated news?
Yes. That film is in the development stages, and I'm looking to make my directorial debut. I'm very proud of it. I'm super secretive about the premise, but it's going to make you think. It will be not only visually horrifying but mentally horrifying as well. It's a statement piece for sure, and I'm excited for people to experience it.
Your fans ask at least once to twice yearly, and that's probably an understatement, but are we a little closer to a Smart Guy reboot?
Ha. Yeah, that's an understatement, for sure. It's a passion project, ya know. It's also a longer process than I think people realize - it's all about timing. Everyone has to be available. I have to be available. The script has to be perfect. My schedule won't allow me to do it at the moment, but it will happen, and it'll be worth the wait. The idea I came up with is nostalgic yet fresh, and It's not something that I want to rush. When it does happen, it will be something the OG fans can enjoy and something for a new generation of fans to enjoy as well.
What advice do you have for upcoming actors who you've inspired along the way?
Stay hungry. Stay passionate and allow yourself to be inspired constantly - It will keep you motivated to challenge yourself and become better. Never become complacent, and always have goals you want to reach. And along the journey - keep an attitude of gratitude and remember that all blessings come from above.
If you could act alongside one actor in a movie, who would it be and why?
Man. That's a loaded question. However, If I had to name one, it would probably be The Rock. I'd love to do some sort of action comedy with him. The size difference alone would be a selling point. I feel like it could be hilarious.
Who's one character you would want to play in any movie if you could?
I'd love to play either Prince or Bruno Mars in a biopic. I also need to play a superhero at some point. Any superhero will do, but it's a dream to play an adult Miles Morales at some point.
How do you keep yourself motivated to keep going?
My faith keeps me motivated to keep going because I know that I was chosen. God blessed me with these gifts, so I know that there are always new heights and blessings waiting for me to reach, and I don't take them for granted. I'm super thankful I get to do what I do for a living. It brings me so much joy. I think staying inspired is something that always keeps me motivated as well. Motivation to challenge yourself - to push and surprise yourself is so important.
With a career that keeps evolving, what's next for Tahj Mowry?
More film, for sure. Film is a huge passion of mine, and I love the process of making films and aspire to win an Oscar at one point. So, I'm excited to showcase my other sides as an actor, and film is a great space to do that. Obviously more TV as well. I'll always love doing TV because that's how I got my start - it's my comfort place, which is why I'm so excited for "Muppets Mayhem," premiering this year on Disney +. It's such an amazing show. I'm so proud of it. The show gives you everything you want in a television show. It's hilarious; it's heartfelt; it's got drama and romance, great music, super famous guest stars, and of course…Muppets. It's a treat for the whole family to enjoy.
