Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.

I’ve been passionate about photography since I was 16. My parents bought my first camera. I liked taking pictures of everything around me. And my first models were my friends. At that time I didn`t imagine photography as my career. It was like a hobby.

Why did you choose to pursue a career as a photographer?

After graduation I realized that I do something wrong, I didn`t enjoy my main work. I also continued to take photos and mini shoots for my friends at the same time. One day I decided to buy a new camera and started to do more interesting shots with some storyline. So at this period, I found myself thinking that I`d rather be a photographer.

How would you describe yourself to people that don't know you?

Firstly I am a pretty open person and I think it played a big part in my career because it`s very important to be able to deal with everyone. Also, I love things being creative and I love working with creative people.

What are the key ingredients for a striking image?

The most important thing for a good result is understanding between team members (photographer, model, stylist, etc.) It`s best to have a trusted – team. Preparation and a positive attitude also play major roles.

How long does it take to create one of these wonderful works?

Sometimes I just have to look at one model and the idea comes up. Then I start to prepare: I get together with the whole team. We are talking about the look, makeup, and style. Of course, I need some time to think about how we are going to do this. On average, preparing takes about one week.

Has your vision and style evolved or changed over time?

Sometimes I like to try new things or colors, but I mostly have my own style.

Could you share how you expand your vision of art, as a creative director?

I like to read some fashion magazines, communicate with interesting creative photographers.

What do you think is the hardest thing in your life you've ever had to overcome?

The hardest part of my life is the decision to move to another country and start work in the sphere of photography. It was a time when my regular life changed.

What has been the highlight of your career so far and what are your hopes/dreams for the future?

One of the most auspicious moments in my career was a collaboration with two different actors and publication in a big fashion magazine. My dream is to collaborate with the biggest fashion brands. All my works you can see on my Instagram account @van_helllen
